To be honest I have nothing to blog about.
My life has pretty much groaned to a halt.
I'm not moving forward. I'm not moving backwards.

Just standing still.

Frozen mid stride like the Tinman caught in the rain.
Waiting for Dorthy and the oil can.
Listening for the ticking of a heart that isn't there.
Rusting.

Guess what time it is?

The Vernal Equinox

As the newly reborn sun races across the sky, the days become longer, the air warmer and, once again, life begins to return to the land. Twice a year, day and night become equal in length.

To the elders of the Olde Way, these times, equinoxes, were markers in which seeds would be planted and then harvested. The first of these, the Spring or Vernal Equinox occurs on or about March 21st.

The ancient goddess, Eostre, a Saxon deity who marked not only the passage of time but also symbolized new life and fertility, was the key symbol of this celebration which was also known as Ostara.

Legend has it that the goddess was saved by a bird whose wings had become frozen by the cold of winter. This process turned the bird into a hare. Yet this was no ordinary cottontail; this long-eared rabbit could also lay eggs!

The main symbols for Easter are the egg, for new life or beginnings, and the rabbit/hare, for fertility.

A common old wives' tale regarding the vernal equinox is that this is the one day of the year that eggs can be balanced on their end. Although this myth is untrue (eggs can be balanced on any date with enough patience) and unsound (would it be different in both hemispheres? Why only the instant of vernal equinox? Why not autumnal equinox?) it is often perpetuated in the news. Also, the current Guiness world record for egg balancing wasn't done on the Vernal equinox.

Relationship to Easter

As Christianity spread across Europe and Britain, these older symbols became incorporated into the new faith's holiday of Easter; even the name seems to have been a variant of the Goddess whose festival was originally celebrated with the arrival of spring. The old rites honoring the planting of new seeds, the fertility of the land and its people, and the hope of the new life arising in the world were replaced by solemn displays commemorating Christ and Christian beliefs.

(BTW-Here's the truth about the Easter bunny!)

Pookless in Seattle

The camera makes everyone a tourist in other people's reality, and eventually in one's own.
-Susan Sontag

Yesterday, Scott and I decided to do a tourist-ie Seattle thing.

We went to the famous Pike Place Public Market.

This place is ranked third on the lists of things to do in Seattle.
(First being the Space Needle. Second being a ride on the Monorail-Guess that one will be off those lists in the future.)

It turned out to be a really cool place.

And-I have a feeling that we'll be going back for another visit in the future because there is a lot to see. Posted by Picasa

After a quick jaunt through the "dry" part of the market, where all of the jewelry, t-shirts and flowers are sold, we found a place to eat lunch.

The Athenian Inn!

This place is great. All of the tables over look the fishing yard and the bay beyond. They serve great fish and chips with sourdough. And....

It's the cafe that was used for a scene in Sleepless in Seattle! Posted by Picasa

No trip to the market is complete without a stop by
the very first Starbucks coffee shop.

Yes folks this is where it all began.

Before this place opened people just sat around staring at those funny brown bean thingys wondering what the heck they were good for.

And then the gods spoke and a man came down from the mountain and said, "Let us grind these. Then we will run water through them. Add milk, drizzle carmel, add chocolate and whipped cream, add a shot of vanilla flavoring and ice. Then we will consume these beans as nature intended...In the form of a super dupper mega million calorie Frappacino." Posted by Picasa

Scott felt the need to call Shawn,
the biggest Starbucks coffee whore in the world,
and brag. Posted by Picasa

On our way back from Starbucks we passed through the fish market.

Every kind of seafood you can imagine is on display. All of it is fresh from the sea too.

The "fish mongers" toss the fish over the tourist’s heads. We also saw one of the fish guys chasing a group of screaming teens with a frozen monk fish. It was very amusing.

So, like all good tourist, we had to take a picture of the fish.

I made Scott poke one while I snapped this picture. (Another common tourist thing to do at the market.)

He said he feels "like a yuppie with (his) two Starbucks cups and using a pinkie to poke a frozen fish."

He thought the fish market was interesting.
I was fascinated. I've never seen so much seafood in my life. Posted by Picasa

Scott found something else interesting across the street from the market.

(Although this time
I would not let him get
close enough to poke it.)

Another great
"Pookie" adventure
for the history books.

The Starry Night

I'm posting this in response to The Pez Mommy Moonwriter's blog posting.

If I Were A...Meme:

-If I were a natural phenomenon, I would be...a thunderstorm. Nothing is else in this world is so frightening, sad and beautiful all at once.

-If I were a metal, I would be...copper. It's the same color as my hair. Also-"Copper was associated with the goddess Aphrodite/Venus in mythology and alchemy." Venus is very important to my sign and to my charts. I was born as a Venus sign under the star Venus!

-If I were an animal, I would be...a cat. I have many of the characteristics of a cat. I seem to have a way with cats that many do not. I've been called a "cat whisperer." :)

-If I were a color, I would be...blue. There are so many shades of blue. It's color that can be happy, sad, hopeful and desperate.

-If I were a mythological being, I would be...a Phoenix. Many times have I burned and risen from the ashes.

-If I were a human activity, I would be...painting. No matter the colors or the strokes in the end it's art.

-If I were a work of art, I would be... The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. This is by far my favorite painting. From the first time I saw this piece it spoke to me in a way no other painting ever has.

-If I were a weapon, I would be...an arrow. Once released it either flies straight and true or becomes lost in the forest.

-If I were an emotion, I would be...love. Nothing do I crave more from this life than to give and receive love.

-If I were a character in a book, I would be...Elphaba from Wicked. Read the book and then you will understand what it takes to become the Wicked Witch of the West.

-If I were an article of clothing, I would be...a shoe. It's the hardest working piece of clothing.

-If I were a flower, I would be...a sunflower.

"Ah, Sun-flower weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the Sun,
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the traveller's journey is done:
Where the Youth pined away with desire,
And the pale Virgin shrouded in snow
Arise from their graves, and aspire
Where my Sun-flower wishes to go."
William Blake, Ah! Sun-Flower

You are 50% Evil

You are evil, but you haven't yet mastered the dark side.Fear not though - you are on your way to world domination.

How Evil Are You?

That's me-50% evil! Some days I think that I'm more like 75%. Maybe 80% on a really bad day. ;)

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.
-George Bush

Scott and I went to see this movie yesterday and I must say....

WOW!

I was so impressed by the way the characters were developed. The landscapes were sweeping. The sex scenes were tastefully shot. The story was beautifully written.

After seeing this film it makes me angry to hear so many people putting it down for its content. How can they judge something that they themselves have not gone to the theatre to experience? How can they form an opinion about a movie they haven't even seen?

The themes of love, friendship and true devotion are moving. And-the movie really makes a point of showing how the men's choices affected not only their lives but everyone around them. How can anyone say that these are “poor themes" for a movie?

If you haven't seen Brokeback Mountain. Go! See it. Then form an opinionPosted by Picasa
